One of the great things about the XZ-1 is that it will detect the settings you need automatically when you are a beginner but, when you have more experience, you can choose to configure your settings manually.

The Olympus XZ-1 is at the high end of what’s known as point and shoot cameras. Point and shoot cameras are those that don’t require you to manually adjust the setting for such things as light level, focus, aperture, or shutter speed. While many point and shoot digital cameras are priced to appeal to photography novices, students and those on a tight budget, the XZ-1 has taken a leap in this field and released something more sophisticated. While definitely an user friendly and highly automated point and shoot camera, the XZ-1 has added an especially high powered lens and many more features than they typical camera in this category.

The battery life of the Olympus XZ-1 is not the longest living in the industry, which can be problematic depending upon how much you use it. Though some cameras can take 500 or more pictures with a single charge, this battery will last about 300 to 350 images per charge. To prevent an embarrassing moment such as losing power, always charge your battery before you use it the next day. You also have to keep in mind that a battery will only last so long and that replacement batteries are not cheap. Replacement batteries are simply part of having a digital camera, and the battery life on the XZ-1 is definitely well above most standards in this industry. While the Olympus XZ-1 has its limitations, as do other digital cameras, but when considered as a whole package it is user friendly and reliable. The weakest areas is probably the quality of the HD movie mode, and this is really a secondary feature of a camera mainly made for taking still photos. Because it has a great variety of features and settings, the digital XZ-1 will work well for those seeking a compact point-and-shoot camera.
