Picking up a new language is not as difficult as you might think. The truth is, you can have a great time learning a new language! Find a good tutor, if possible. CDs/books can be very helpful. But with a tutor at your side, you can receive help and answers you just can’t get from a book or CD. Language tutors need to be fluent in their language. A good tutor can teach you various dialects in the language of instruction.
If you’ll be visiting a country where Spanish is spoken, it’s a good idea to learn the local dialect to you’ll be able to communicate better. A tutor can help you to know the casual meanings of certain words found in Spanish. Language CD’s and books are usually more formal in what they teach. Yet a tutor can teach you to talk in slang words.
One trick you can use is to label the objects around you. You can do this both at home and work, if it’s practical. This is a way you can immerse yourself in Spanish vocabulary by seeing the words and what objects they go with. Nothing is more embarrassing than using one word when you meant to use another! When you don’t know what you’re saying, you can end up confusing similar sounding words that mean very different things. The reason this method of tagging works is that your mind immediately begins to think using the new language rather than your native one whenever you look at the labeled items.
Test yourself with flashcards This may seem very simple, but it works well. These are basic memorization tools and the reason people still use them is because they work! You can go beyond simple vocabulary with flashcards, and use different tenses and grammatical rules as well. Flashcards are a tool that you can take around with you and use whenever you find an extra moment. Use them with someone else and let them quiz you sometimes. Write your native language on one side, Spanish on the other and you are ready to go!
Learning Spanish or any new language does not have to be so painful. Getting started seems the hardest part sometimes, but it’ll become a lot less difficult in a little time. Just try to stick with it, and use all the tricks you can find. Soon enough you’ll be fluent.
