Asthma Management

Every year, thousands of New Zealanders are hospitalized due to severe asthma attacks. These attacks usually occur when an asthmatic is in a high irritation area without an inhaler. If you suffer from asthma, it’s important that you correctly manage your condition and stay orgazined.

Asthma is inflammation of the airways. This causes the muscles around the airways to tighten, and the swollen airways let through much less air than a normal airway. This is why asthmatics are short of breath.

Various irritants – cigarette smoke, cold air, cleaning fluids, perfume, hair spray, dandruff, pollen from certain plants and dust – can trigger asthma. A person suffering an asthma attack might wheeze, feel light-headed, experience tightness across their chest, cough violently, and struggle to breathe. Asthma affects millions of people worldwide, but experts say most people with asthma can live a normal, active life.

The key to managing asthma is paying careful attention to your symptoms. What situations and places trigger asthma attacks? Once you learn to identify these triggers, you can avoid, minimize and manage them. You can also use a peak-flow meter to monitor your breathing – this will identify further triggers.

For example, perhaps every time your son goes to his friend’s house to play he has an asthma attack. You might conclude one of the trees in their backyard causes your son’s asthma. Getting your son to pack his inhaler and take medicine before he goes to his friend’s house means he can still play without suffering an asthma attack.

The first step in effective asthma management is a correct diagnosis. Asthma symptoms vary between people, and can often be mistaken for other diseases. Asthma can be very difficult to identify in young children, so a proper diagnosis might to be available until a child is over 6.

Most people with asthma take two kinds of medication: a long-term, every-day mediation to control their symptoms, and a quick relief medication (usually in inhaler form) to fight off asthma attacks.

With the right medical supplies and the skills to learn what triggers your asthma and how to avoid those triggers, you can live a full and active life with asthma.

Being healthy through life is one such task which should be maintained always. For this, exercises and balanced diet should be taken everyday.
